What is a Pinewood Derby?

The Pinewood Derby is a race of Pinewood Derby Cars!

The cars are made from a Pine Car Basic Car Kit which includes: a wood block (with axle slots on the bottom of the block), wheels, axles, hub caps and complete instructions.

You shape the block into whatever shape you desire (without altering the axle slots). Then seal and paint to desired color(s). The wheels and axles are then put on the car. Weights may be added to bring the car up to a maximum weight of 5.0 ounces.

Racing Specifications:

  • The length is not to exceed 7 inches and its width must not exceed 2.75 inches (including the wheels).

  • Maximum weight is 5.0 ounces including the wheels.

  • The cars must be propelled by gravity only!

  • The distance between the axles cannot be altered from the original kit. They must be placed in the axle slots provided in the kit.

  • Wheel thickness cannot be altered.

The Race Is On!

The cars are placed on a track 31'9" long. Cars start by gravity from a standstill position at a starting line on the track (or special ramp), without any help. NO PUSHING ALLOWED! The car whose nose is first over the finish line is the winner!
